National Writing Project: Letters to the next president

Letters are a great way to teach voice. The audience is focused on a single person. The writer is having a conversation with words with an audience of one. The Letters to the Next President Project began with a specific audience of two possible presidents. Now the audience is a little more defined! This great idea is sponsored by the National Wrtiing Project

Check out a short video on the topic: Letters to the Next President: Writing Our Future

Let's keep writing!

PROJECT LETTERS

Just "imagine".......millions of letters going out on the same day to our new President. All of them asking for one thing.......Immigration Reform. When? February 12, 2009. Why? Allow those undocumented Immigrants to surface and assimilate into this great melting pot which will allow us an economic recovery by infusing cash spending into our struggling economy. What Date? February 12, 2009 is the Bi-Centennial Birth date of Abraham Lincoln. How? Talk to your neighbors, employers, friends, children, parents. Who? All people of all race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation or religion that believe in Immigration Reform or strengthening our economy through the centuries old concept of allowing low skilled labor to flourish and the expansion of minds through educating all youths (undocumented or not). Everyone can send a letter to the President. No marching in the streets. What will this achieve? This will prioritize the Immigration issue moving it from 7th or 8th on the list and tying it in with the economy at the top of the list. The media attention will be incredible.

Just imagine the simple act of writing a few words on a piece of paper and putting it in the mail all on one day. Imagine the impact!!!!

Let's prioritize this issue in a manner that is respectful and yet uses the most well known federal system of communication available to us. The Postal Service!!! Talk about assimilating into this great country!!!

We have many community activists nationwide already signed on. We have had the privilege of doing some radio talk shows in California and we created an infomercial to be played on TV44 (Home of the Diamondbacks in Spanish). We have made numerous live and taped appearances on local television shows in Phoenix, Arizona. La Voz newspaper a division of the Arizona Republic in Phoenix, Arizona had a front cover story about the project. I mention it daily on my radio talk show!!!

Send Letters on February 12, 2009 to:
President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500
